In 2015, Arise Africa began its partnership with Taonga School, which was started by Teacher Abi in 2011. Abi is originally from England & came to Lusaka in 2009 to teach for a year with Old MacDonald’s Farm, an organization that helps street boys in Lusaka. Abi began tutoring the boys on the Farm, and slowly, more and more children from the community began showing up at the gates to learn. Fast forward to today, Taonga now has 5 grades with over 185 students! It’s safe to say that they are running out of room. Because of the limited space of the school’s property, Taonga School is only able to hold up to 4 grades on the property. Students that completed grade 4 were willing to repeat the grade because they didn’t want to leave Teacher Abi, which speaks so highly of her love and dedication to her students. With this in mind, Arise made the decision to have students going into grade 5 meet at one of our Arise Homes. Although the Arise Home has been a great quick fix for the past year, it can’t be longterm solution. Through the generosity of Park Cities Presbyterian Church, land was purchased this summer for “Taonga Two.” Fast forward to today, we are ready to start building a new school, and we need your help! Lusaka runs on a year-round school schedule, which means that in January of 2019, we will have 6 grades at Taonga, meaning that two grades of students will be without classrooms. Help us make Taonga Two a reality by partnering with us to help build a new school for grades 5-12!
